You do not need a bag full of equipment to start Muay Thai. Here is what matters and when to buy it.
Boxing Gloves
Your most important purchase. Adults commonly use 12 to 16 oz gloves for training; heavier gloves offer more protection for partners. Youth students need 6 to 8 oz boxing gloves.
Hand Wraps
Wraps support your wrists and knuckles under your gloves. They are inexpensive and help prevent injury. Learn to wrap properly from your coach.
Shin Guards
Needed for partner kicking drills and sparring. Choose a snug fit that covers the shin and top of the foot.
Mouthpiece
Required for approved sparring. A boil-and-bite mouthpiece is a good start.
Clothing
- Muay Thai shorts or athletic shorts that allow high kicks
- A breathable shirt
- Training is barefoot on the mats
What to Buy First
Equipment is not required for your trial session. If you decide to join, start with gloves and wraps, then add shin guards and a mouthpiece as you progress. Ask your coach for recommendations before buying.
