Muay Thai and kickboxing look similar at first glance, but there are important differences in technique and training.
Weapons
Muay Thai uses eight limbs: fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Most kickboxing styles limit or prohibit elbows and many knee strikes.
The Clinch
Muay Thai includes extensive clinch work. Kickboxing typically separates fighters quickly when they tie up.
Kicking Style
Muay Thai roundhouse kicks rotate the hips through the target and strike with the shin. Kickboxing kicks often snap back faster and may strike with the foot.
Rhythm and Stance
Muay Thai uses a taller, square stance to check kicks and enter the clinch. Kickboxing stances are often more bladed and boxing-influenced.
- Choose Muay Thai for a complete striking system
- Choose kickboxing if you prefer fast-paced punching and kicking only
- Either is a great workout
