Muay Thai is the national combat sport of Thailand, often called the Art of Eight Limbs because it uses eight points of contact: two fists, two elbows, two knees, and two shins.
The Eight Weapons
- Punches: jab, cross, hook, uppercut
- Elbows: short, sharp strikes at close range
- Knees: powerful strikes from the clinch or at range
- Kicks: the famous roundhouse kick with the shin, plus teeps (push kicks)
The Clinch
Muay Thai is unique for its stand-up grappling, called the clinch, where fighters control each other's posture and strike with knees and elbows.
How Muay Thai Is Trained
Classes typically include skipping, shadowboxing, technical drills, pad work with a partner or coach, heavy bag rounds, clinch work, conditioning, and for ready students, controlled sparring.
Why It Is So Popular
Muay Thai is effective, simple to learn, and an outstanding workout. It is a core part of modern MMA and is trained worldwide by people of every age and background.
Authentic Muay Thai vs. Cardio Kickboxing
Cardio kickboxing borrows moves for fitness. Authentic Muay Thai teaches real technique, defense, and timing, so you get fitter and gain real skills.
